Students experience an exciting and engaging range of topics in the 3 year History KS3 curriculum. Their curiosity is inspired to know more about the past and the teaching of key topics will equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. Students are taught in mixed-ability groups in Years 7,8 and 9.  The curriculum investigates and analyses key fascinating historical events across countries in the world at different time periods. The Key Stage 3 History programme focusses on themes, such as Empire Building, Conflict, Social Changes, Power and Monarchy and Human Rights.

GCSE History enables students to engage with key issues such as conflict, understand what drives change and how the past influences the present. Students are encouraged to think critically and acquire a range of knowledge and make key links and experience key developments between time periods.  The History GCSE follows the AQA specification and is a two-year course. There is a strong focus on developing knowledge and a deep understanding of how Britain and aspects of the wider world has developed over time. The GCSE is examined via two, 2-hour examinations that combines source skills and knowledge.  The units we follow focus on Understanding the Modern World with Conflict and Tension in the inter war years 1918-39 and an in-depth study of Germany 1890-1945. In addition, there are two British units on Shaping the Nation through focussing on Health and the People and the Normans.

History is an academic subject that widens students’ experience and develops qualities of perception and judgement. History A Level helps students understand the significance of historical events, the role of individuals in history and the nature of change over time. Students gain a deeper understanding of the past through political, social, economic and cultural perspectives. The engaging topics available to them throughout the course will provide them with the knowledge and skills they require to succeed as historians. We follow AQA with the specific units being The Making of Modern Britain 1951-2007 and the Quest for Political Stability in Germany 1871 – 1991. Students will acquire important skills and qualities of mind that can be transferable to many university degrees, occupations and careers. It is extremely enjoyable and not only enables students to learn about the past but to understand the past and come to a better understanding of the present.
